Windows Dial Up Networking ErrorsBelow are a list of common windows dial up networking errors and possible solutions. (800) 309-9658) Error 629The cause of this error is "random" but usually caused by incorrect dial up settings. Double check that TCP/IP is installed in control panel -> network, and that your password is correct. Error 630Your modem is not configured correctly. See description for error 633. Error 633Remove and re-install the modem driver. If this does not work, find the telephon.ini file, and rename to telephon.bak. Restart the computer. Error 640Unable to negotiate modem connection. This error is commonly caused by noisy phone lines, and your modem being unable to drop it's speed to suit line conditions. Try reducing your connection speed. Error 645Unable to run dial up networking. Dial up networking is not installed correctly, some components are missing or damaged. Reinstall dial up networking. If this does not work correctly the following files may be missing or damaged: winsock.dll, wsock32.dll. You may need to extract these files from the original Windows media manually. Error 650Treat as error 645. Error 659The media.ini file refers to an unknown device. One or more of the dial up networking files is corrupt or missing. Reinstall dial up networking. Error 676The line is busy. Check that the phone number is correct. Try to turn off dialling rules (or turn off "use area code and country code"), and try again. Error 678The number is not answering. Check that the phone number is correct, and that dialling rules are not putting a 0 or such in front of the number. Try putting 3 commas in front of the number, and a comma in between each number. This will slow down the dialling, which may need to be done on some older exchanges. Error 680No dial tone. Try putting 1-3 commas in front of the phone number. Check that a number does not have to be dialed to get an external line. Check that the phone line is connected to the "line" socket on the modem. Check that the cord between the wall socket and the modem works. Error 691Can not establish a dial up networking connection. Check your username/password. Check that the dial up connection is not using a dial in script. Error 692Hardware failure in port or attached device. Check that the modem is turned on and installed correctly. Try restarting the computer. If the error has started after a recent storm, the modem and/or COM port may have been fried. Error 718Can not establish a dial up networking connection. Check your username/password. Check that the dial up connection is not using a dial in script. Error 720Dial up networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols. Check that TCP/IP is installed. Check that the dial up networking connection does not have a dial in script associated with it. Check that control panel -> network only has one dial up adapter, and one set of TCP/IP, or one set of TCP/IP per device. If all of the above fails, reinstall TCP/IP and re-create the dial up networking connection. Error 731Unable to establish a dial up networking connection - protocol not configured. Check that TCP/IP is installed, as per error 720. Error 745An essential file is missing. Reinstall dial up networking. Error 749The Connection Manager phone number was not
saved correctly. If using the Connection Manager software, re-enter the
phone number, by either picking from the address book, or manually typing
the number in. |
